I hope the magazine sale is going well.  You only have until Wednesday, Sept. 8, to get the orders in.  Thank you for supporting our school.

Thank you to the two ladies who volunteered to be room moms for our class - Tracy Field and Crystal Foreman.  They will be contacting you this year for help with parties and special events.  Coming up next month is the much anticipated Halloween Carnival.  Help is always need to run our game that day.

If you would like to come to our class to do a craft, please let me know.  You provide the idea and the supplies.  Maybe you’d like to read a story and then do a craft that goes with the story.  Also, if you have a job, a hobby, or a special interest in something and would like to share it with the class, we would love it.  Let me know when you can come in and we’ll try to work around your schedule.

I’m so excited to let you know that we will have a new student in our class (which will bring our class total to 13).  Alayna Calvillo will be in the Foster Jaws family starting Tuesday, September 7.  I talked to the class about being kind and welcoming to her.  I’m sure they will all welcome her warmly.

We got through our first week of school without a scratch!  Has your child be coming home tired and hungry?  It’s hard getting up in the morning and spending the whole day in class.  It will get easier for all of us once we establish and get used to our routine.  Next week, we’ll begin more classes, such as reading, handwriting, and social studies, in addition to the spelling and math we’ve already started.

I’m really enjoying getting to know  your child.  As a group and individually, they are a great class.  The kids voted on a class name on Wednesday.  We are officially known as “Foster Jaws”.  I tried to get them to change Jaws to Sharks, but no go.  So I’ll think of it as the “Jaws of Life” while they think of shark jaws.

Please fill out and return your PSA information sheet and the computer permission form if you have not done so already.  Thanks.

Just in case you didn’t know, ice cream (cups or bars) is available for purchase during lunch.  It costs 50 cents and the children need to give me the money in the morning.  It can not come off of their lunch card (if they have one).

Scholastic Book Orders are in your child’s Friday folder today.  There are two booklets to look through.  One is the book choices and the other one, Click, has computer programs and games.  Ordering online information was included in the folder.  There is also a Scholastic Book Order page on my website with the information.  There is never any obligation to buy anything, but look through if you have a chance.

Our Opening School Mass will be next Friday, August 27, at 8:30.  The children are required to wear full dress uniform.  Please have your child on time for school, so we can go over to church as a class.  The spelling test will be after Mass.

Next week we will be studying:

Spelling - short e words:  send   bell   well   help   fell   went   spell   next   tell    end       For extra help, go to www.spellingconnectionsonline.com  Grade 2  Unit 2    or   www.spellingcity.com

Math - more/fewer; number order

Reading - letters and sounds;read decodable booklets.  Big Book story “Back to School” and poem “And the Answer Is…”  There will be a weekly reading test given on Friday.  Also, each week I will give you 5 high frequency words to work with your child .  High frequency words for this coming week:  the   can   and   on   am    Suggestion:  Make flash cards and go over the words until your child masters them and is ready for more words.

Social Studies - Unit 1    Families   In this unit the children will need to know their address as they will be tested on it in the next week or two.

Coming Up:

Wednesday, August 25 - Library begins  The children will be able to check out a book.  If they return it the following Wed., they may check out another one.  There is a 10 cents a day fine for books returned late.

Magazine fundraiser kick off.  A packet will be sent home with your child.

                                        Early dismissal - 2 pm

Friday, August 27 -  Mass - Full Dress Uniform           Scholastic Book Orders due   Spelling Test     Reading Test     Book Buddies - We partner with Mrs. Noonan’s 4th grade class for 30 minutes of reading.   Show and Tell

It was great to see everyone at the Open House on Thursday night.  We had a good first day today.  It seemed to go very quickly with everything we did.  We went over classroom rules, behavior consequences, toured the school, and went to lunch and recess and specials (Art, Health, and Religion).  Our new pastor, Fr. Howard, stopped by to say hello to the class.  Both first grade classes went over to the church to practice genuflecting, putting the kneelers up and down without a sound, sitting, kneeling, and the sign of peace.  After reading 2 stories and playing a round of Back to School Jingo, it was time to go home.

FYI - Girls need to wear shorts under their uniform jumper; no dangling earrings, studs only; no nail polish  Boys need to wear a belt (black or brown)  they can undo (and do) themselves.

Send a snack with your child everyday starting Monday, Aug. 16.

Prayer Service begins on Monday, Aug. 16 in Cargill Hall at 7:50.  The door to Cargill Hall opens at 7:40.  All the classes sit together.  Please try to get your child to Prayer Service on time.

Wednesday, Aug. 18, is an Early Dismissal Day - The children will be released at 2 pm.

Show and Tell will start on Friday , August 20, (and every Friday thereafter).  Your child may bring in something that is special to them.

Next week:

Spelling - The spelling words for next week are:  ask   as   sat   fan   map   cap   hand   sad   fact   bat    For practice at home, go to www.spellingconnectionsonline.com Grade 2  Unit 1 or  try www.spellingcity.com  There will be a spelling test on Friday, Aug. 20.  I will grade the tests but not record them so you can see what the test will be like.  I’ll start recording grades the following week.

Math - assessments, number recognition; count sets to 10

Reading - assessments

Have a wonderful weekend          God bless,
